From Quetelet’s index to BMI
Adolphe Quetelet developed the weight-to-height-squared relationship in the nineteenth century while studying populations. Ancel Keys and colleagues popularized the name “body mass index” in 1972 after comparing weight-height indices.
The history matters because BMI was built for population comparison. Its convenience does not turn it into a direct measurement of an individual’s body composition.
Worked example
BMI for an adult at 170 cm and 65 kg
This example demonstrates the arithmetic and then separates the number from its health interpretation.
- Example input
- Height 170 cm; weight 65 kg; metric units.
- Convert 170 cm to 1.70 m.
- Square the height: 1.70 × 1.70 = 2.89.
- Divide weight by squared height: 65 ÷ 2.89 ≈ 22.49.
- Using the page’s adult cutoffs, 22.49 falls in the displayed healthy reference band.
Example result: BMI ≈ 22.49; reference weight band for this height ≈ 53.5–72.0 kg.
This is a broad adult screening result. It does not measure body fat or establish a personal ideal weight.
